About Heartland Psychotherapy

Ann L. Person Steely MSW LICSW LADC (She/Her)

I am a clinical social worker who specializes in working with adolescents and adults in individual and family psychotherapy.  I received my social work degree and substance use counseling education from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities.  I completed the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Training Program (PPTP) through the Minnesota Psychoanalytic Society and Institute and the Eating Disorders, Compulsions, and Addiction program through the William Alanson White Institute in NYC.  I treat all major mental health conditions and I have a special interest in working with other mental health and health professionals as well as individuals wanting support around disordered eating, compulsions, problematic substance use, and challenges related to a loved one's substance use.

What Is Psychotherapy Like With Me?

My focus in therapy is on my relationship with you, understanding what you need as an individual, and using this understanding to help you find insight into how to make the changes you want to make in your life.  I will help you find greater ease through the exploration of your emotions, thoughts, behaviors, and relationships. I will help you work towards goals, developing a deeper understanding of the emotions and thoughts that prevent you from making changes in your life.  I use a psychoanalytic approach to therapy.  My practice is grounded in anti-racism, social justice, and is affirming of all genders/sexualities and racial/cultural identities. I am body-positive, poly/kink aware, and believe that political/societal structures deeply impact our overall health and influence how we think, feel, and act.

What is Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy?

Psychoanalytic psychotherapy uses the theories behind psychoanalysis that are uniquely helpful for developing lasting psychological change. Psychoanalytic thought recognizes that all human beings have pain and difficulty in their lives and need ways to cope. The ways people cope are helpful and also limiting. Psychoanalytic psychotherapists are trained to help people sort this out so that they can take steps to change patterns that are no longer helpful in their lives. This is done through an exploration of relationships, coping strategies, and personal life experiences.  This exploration, along with the therapy relationship itself, encourages self acceptance and leads to increased wellness and recovery from traumas.

Appointments and Scheduling

Once we have decided together about a start date for therapy, I will schedule our sessions at least weekly at the same time each week.  This allows us to have a schedule we both can rely on and makes the therapy space safe and regular.  Sometimes I meet with people multiple times per week as well if it makes sense for what we are working on together.

Initial Consultation - $300

45 min Psychotherapy Session - $130
